Probably produced for the European export market, the vase is distinguished by its unusual and strongly bulbous form, giving it considerable presence and setting it apart from the more conventional shapes associated with Japanese export porcelain of the period. The porcelain is richly decorated in the classical Arita Imari palette, combining deep underglaze cobalt blue with iron-red oxide, overglaze enamels and extensive gold gilding. Four distinct decorative panels feature arrangements of flowers and vases, surrounded by further elaborate ornament incorporating peonies and other flowering plants. The exceptionally rich cobalt blue provides a striking contrast with the warm iron red and extensive gilt decoration. A considerable proportion of the surface is enhanced with gilding. Its reflective quality is particularly difficult to capture photographically, and the richness and complexity of the decoration are considerably more apparent when the vase is viewed in person. Japanese export porcelain became highly desirable among European aristocratic and royal patrons during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Large and richly decorated porcelain vessels were displayed within grand houses and palaces and represented prestigious and expensive luxury objects when they first arrived in Europe. Japanese Imari porcelain was particularly admired for its bold patterns and sumptuous combination of cobalt blue, iron red, coloured enamels and gold. Its arrival in Europe contributed significantly to changing tastes in Asian porcelain and subsequently influenced generations of European ceramic manufacturers. Standing an impressive 42 cm high including its antique hardwood cover and stand, this is a particularly decorative example of early Japanese Arita porcelain. More than 300 years old and remaining in very good condition, the vase represents a rare opportunity to acquire a substantial and beautifully decorated example of early Japanese Imari ware.
