The cabinet features a pair of glazed doors flanked by canted corners embellished with decorative lacquer work. Above is the original hand-painted lacquered top and an architectural bamboo gallery framing the original mirror, creating a particularly decorative silhouette. A central pull-out drawer provides additional concealed storage, while the glazed interior contains two fixed shelves. Particularly appealing is the survival of the original embossed paper lining, adding considerable period character to the interior. Bamboo furniture became highly fashionable in Britain during the later Victorian period, reflecting the European fascination with East Asian decorative arts. Bamboo was frequently combined with lacquered or Japanned surfaces, painted panels, mirrors and decorative detailing to create distinctive furniture for fashionable domestic interiors. The combination of glazing and shelving makes this example particularly suitable as a display cabinet or bookcase, while its bamboo framework and lacquer decoration give it considerable visual presence. Presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use.
