The vessel is formed using traditional coopered construction, with individual oak staves shaped to create the distinctive bottle form and secured by closely fitted copper bands. The combination of timber and metal gives the piece a particularly attractive rustic and vernacular appearance. Its construction reflects the techniques associated with traditional European cooperage, where shaped wooden staves and metal bands were employed in the manufacture of barrels, drinking vessels and containers for wine, cider and other liquids. The oak has developed a rich golden colour and attractive aged patina, complemented by the naturally mellowed surface of the copper fittings. Its unusually tall bottle-shaped profile gives the piece considerable decorative appeal. Now best suited to decorative display rather than the storage or serving of liquids, it would make an appealing addition to a collection of antique wine accessories, French folk art or traditional coopered objects. Presented in very good antique condition with appropriate surface wear and patination consistent with age.
