An exceptional vintage English haberdashery shop display cabinet by Dudley & Co, dating to circa 1940 and retaining an impressive … Read more An exceptional vintage English haberdashery shop display cabinet by Dudley & Co, dating to circa 1940 and retaining an impressive arrangement of sixteen original glass-fronted drawers. Constructed from beech, the cabinet displays a particularly attractive honey-toned colour and pronounced natural grain. The timber has been carefully waxed, enhancing its warm patina while preserving the utilitarian character of this substantial piece of commercial furniture. The upper section comprises sixteen generously proportioned drawers, each retaining its original glass front and metal handle. The glazed construction would originally have allowed fabrics, haberdashery accessories and other merchandise to be identified while remaining neatly organised. Below, two sliding doors open to reveal additional enclosed storage space. The original maker's label remains positioned above the drawers and identifies Dudley & Co of Holloway, London, specialists associated with shop fittings and commercial display furniture. Haberdashery cabinets were purpose-built for drapers, tailors and retailers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their combination of extensive compartmentalised storage and glazed drawer fronts has subsequently made surviving examples particularly desirable as practical statement furniture. The cabinet is presented in very good vintage condition. The drawers operate smoothly and the original glass and metal handles remain in place. Some restoration has previously been undertaken to several drawer fronts, without affecting the functionality or overall character of the cabinet. with its impressive height, extensive storage capacity and distinctive commercial heritage, this cabinet would make a striking addition to a living room, hallway, dressing room, retail interior or collection display.
