The tin-glazed earthenware body features elaborate blue decoration in the lambrequin style, a decorative vocabulary closely associated with rouen faience and developed from baroque ornamental designs. The box is fitted with pewter hinges and mounts and bears the known rouen mark “hv.” rouen became one of france's most important centres for faience production, with the poterat family playing a particularly influential role in developing the celebrated rouen decorative style. This example is believed to be associated with the tradition of the former poterat factory, subsequently acquired by nicolas fouquay. An almost identical form is represented in the ceramics collection of the victoria and albert museum in london, providing an interesting museum comparison. Particularly notable is the survival of the box in such good condition, given the inherently delicate nature of tin-glazed earthenware. A rare and highly collectable example of historic french faience with considerable decorative appeal.
