This striking 12" mid-century Italian art glass amphora vase features a scavo finish in iridescent white with vivid, hand-applied cobalt blue handles.
Scavo (Italian for "excavated") is a specialized Murano glassmaking technique introduced in the mid-20th century. During the blowing process, corrosive salts and minerals are applied to the glass surface under heat to replicate the textured, weathered appearance of ancient Roman artifacts.
This vase is attributed to the Murano company Gambaro e Poggi, but could also be Archimede Seguso, or Gino Cenedese/ Alfredo Barbini, who originated the technique.
