Original woodcut print of a roadrunner by Nellie V. Buel, hand-signed in pencil, numbered 15/50, titled "Paisano" in the margin. Sheet measures 12.5 in. H x 5.75 in. W; unframed. Gentle sheet waviness and normal verso bleed-through typical of the print.
'Paisano' is the roadrunner's Texas nickname — Spanish for 'countryman,' earned on the frontier roads, where the birds trotted alongside wagons and travelers like fellow passengers. Nellie V. Buel (1908–2002) worked from her Cibolo Studio in the Texas Hill Country near Boerne, and her prints are held in the study collection of the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio and in the Tamarind Institute Archives. Every color in a woodcut like this is its own carved block, printed one pass at a time and pulled by hand; this impression is number 15 of an edition of 50, signed and titled in pencil. It comes from the Houston estate of H. Russ Pitman, and another impression of the same print has sold at Vogt Auction Galleries in San Antonio for $400.
