An exceptionally well-preserved pair of Baker Furniture wingback chairs, acquired from a Northern Virginia estate where they had remained with their original owners. With enveloping wings, sculptural rolled arms, and richly textured striped upholstery, the pair brings the presence of English country-house seating to a library, fireside sitting room, or thoughtfully layered living space.
The upholstery gives these chairs their distinctive character. Broad bands of pale celadon and warm terracotta-rust alternate with ivory stripes and fine green accents. Thickened, irregular yarns introduce a pronounced slubbed, tweed-like texture, while a subtle sheen lends depth to the softly contrasting palette. The stripe follows the upholstered contours and continues across the finished backs, making the chairs attractive from every angle.
Dark domed nailheads articulate the sweeping wing edges and elongated scrolled arm facings, continuing along the lower upholstered rails. Loose seat cushions with coordinating welt trim balance the tall backs, while warm brown wood bases provide a grounded architectural finish. Rectangular front legs, gently swept rear legs, and connecting stretchers reinforce the pair’s Georgian-inspired character.
Baker’s history gives these chairs a meaningful place within American furniture making. Founded by Dutch immigrant Siebe Baker in Allegan, Michigan, in 1890, the company developed a distinguished tradition of interpreting historic European furniture. Under Hollis Baker, the study and collection of antiques informed its designs; the predominantly English-inspired Manor House collection debuted in 1932. Baker expanded into dedicated upholstery production in High Point, North Carolina, in 1973—the city identified on the photographed manufacturing label.
The company’s longstanding emphasis on proportion, materials, and upholstery tailoring provides context for the refinement evident here: carefully folded fabric around the rolled arms, crisply defined cushion borders, and nailhead trim that follows the shaped profiles. Baker Furniture branding and the accompanying manufacturing tag document the maker.
The chairs feel substantial and exceptionally well made. Both remain supportive and comfortable, with seat cushions retaining their shape and fullness. The photographed filling label records polyurethane foam together with a blend of polyester fiber, waterfowl feathers, and down.
Their celadon and rust palette pairs beautifully with antique wood furniture, aged brass, botanical prints, and richly patterned rugs. Positioned beside a fireplace or arranged around a small drinks table, they create an inviting conversation setting with the layered character of an established home. Fully upholstered backs also allow the pair to float within a room.
