This exceptional Murano glass chandelier represents a pinnacle of 1940s Italian modernism, attributed to the legendary glassmaster Ercole Barovier of the prestigious furnace of Barovier & Toso. Known historically within the decorative arts market as the Medusa model, this rare work draws direct inspiration from the fluid, organic movement of marine life. Viewed from underneath, the structural layout beautifully mirrors the kinetic silhouette of a jellyfish floating in water, transforming heavy, three-dimensional glass into a weightless statement piece.
The defining characteristic of this fixture is its cohesive use of diverse, multi-textured relief molds. Rather than relying on traditional smooth glass blowing, Barovier utilized specialized iron and relief molds across every single component to create a highly unified, light-diffusing sculptural landscape.
The wide base bowl was pressed into a specialized matrix that permanently imprints the exterior surface with a series of shallow, gentle waves, creating a subtle texture of soft ripples that beautifully catch and diffuse the light into a shimmering glow.
Rising from this base, the stem features a column displaying Barovier's traditional corteccia texture. This rugged, bark-like effect was achieved by expanding the hot glass directly inside a specialized, three-part hinged iron mold. As the textured interior panels clamped shut to stamp the deep, naturalistic furrows, they left behind three distinct vertical seams that authentically trace the length of the column while cleanly masking the internal brass hardware and electrical wiring.
Completing the fluid marine form are the spectacular decorative tentacles, including both the upright vertical and the dramatically scrolled, downward-curling extensions. To form these heavy elements, thick glass was stretched to length and immediately pressed into a relief mold to stamp a uniform, bubble-like grid texture across the surface. While the glass was still hot from the mold, the artisan hand-curved the pieces into their final dynamic postures. In a stroke of engineering genius, these scrolled tentacles were individually numbered and deliberately sculpted to alternate in height, stepping up and down to simulate the pulsing, fluid movement of a living sea creature. This feat required immense skill to bend, scroll, and calibrate the height of the cooling glass without flattening or distorting the fresh, molded ridges.
The timeless brilliance of this piece is further elevated by the historic legacy of its cristallino glass. This legendary formula for ultra-clear, colorless glass was invented in Murano around 1450 by Angelo Barovier, the direct Renaissance ancestor of Ercole. By treating the molten batch with manganese oxide to eliminate the murky yellow and green tints of iron impurities, Angelo successfully created a material that mimicked crystal. In 1455, the Republic of Venice granted him exclusive production rights, turning the formula into a fiercely guarded state secret that propelled Murano to global prominence. By combining Angelo Barovier's historic 1450 cristallino formula with Ercole Barovier's iconic mid-century molded relief work, this fixture stands as a rare, museum-grade sculptural masterpiece of 1940s Italian post-war modernism.
