This exceptional French marble-top commode with ormolu represents the height of Belle Époque craftsmanship from the late 19th or early 20th century. The commode is designed in the Transitional style—the artistic evolution bridging the curvilinear Louis XV period and the geometric Louis XVI period. It features a linear, rectangular upper frieze drawer resting over a lower body with subtle cabriole legs, a signature hallmark of the Transitional era.
E. Kahn & Cⁱᵉ constructed this piece matching the luxurious timber combinations typical of original 18th-century French royal furniture. The front face features a stunning lattice trellis pattern inset with small diamond details. The center showcases an inlaid oval marquetry medallion depicting a classical basket overflowing with flowers and tied with ribbons. The sides feature contrasting, book-matched X-grain veneer panels.
WOODS: The piece is made up of numerous woods—an “artist’s palette” of various hues and grain patterns for decoration overlaying others chosen for the structure. The primary veneer running horizontally across the upper drawers and around the borders is fine mahogany. The intricate criss-cross trellis lattice pattern covering the lower two drawer fronts utilizes a lighter fruitwood, such as pearwood or satinwood. The central floral basket inlay is a masterful mosaic of mixed exotic and indigenous fruitwoods such as holly, sycamore and boxwood. Some were used as naturally colored and others subtly stained to create realistic depth in the floral bouquet. The diamond-patterned, book-matched panels on the sides are made of kingwood, a rich, exotic rosewood prized for its contrasting dark and violet-tinted grain. They are framed by boundaries of darker mahogany. The back and drawer interiors are built from solid, heavy oak, which was the traditional choice for high-end Parisian cabinetry.
HARDWARE: The gilt-bronze, or ormolu, fittings are beautifully cast. The upper frieze features a central relief plaque depicting classical cherubs playing. The corners are protected by heavy Neoclassical corbel mounts, and the bottom skirt features a decorative center mount, matching the intricate ring-pull handles and protective metal shoes on the feet.
TOP: The piece is crowned with its original thick, contoured and beveled rose-toned marble slab with distinctive white and cream veining, adding immense weight and elegance.
MAKER: The commode was crafted by E. Kahn & Cⁱᵉ (Edmond Kahn), a highly respected Parisian maker active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The firm was celebrated for creating elite, museum-grade reproductions of opulent 18th-century French royal furniture originally designed by masters like Riesener, Weisweiler and Cressent. The label on the top places their historic workshop and showroom at 84, Avenue Ledru-Rollin in the 12th arrondissement of Paris, a district legendary for master woodworkers and bronziers. The company was successful enough to operate a prestigious export arm in London simultaneously.
