This monumental, hand-carved solid hardwood sculpture depicting a powerful black bear in a dynamic, low-slung prowling posture.
The artisan has masterfully textured the entire form using deep, rhythmic hand-chisel gouges (boki-bori style facets) that realistically capture the dense, heavy coat of a wilderness bear.
The head is slightly turned with highly stylized, minimalist features, showcasing fully carved-in eyes that emerge natively from the timber grain.
The piece displays beautiful aged character with a rich, dark patina and exhibits natural "checking" (a deep, stable age split along the flank), which is highly typical and desirable in solid-log folk carvings of this immense scale.
This large Bear could be from Canada and dates fro the early 1950s..
Unmarked.
