Antique 19th-Century La Mode Illustrée Hand-Colored Fashion Engraving in Deep Molded Wood Frame
A rare and exceptional find for collectors of fashion history and authentic 19th-century art. This is a genuine antique, original hand-colored French fashion plate engraving from the premier Parisian weekly journal La Mode Illustrée, dating to the high Victorian era.
Beautifully illustrated by the famed historical costume artist Anaïs Toudouze, the piece depicts a serene garden scene showcasing the height of mid-to-late Victorian couture. One figure sits in a meticulously structured white gown reading a letter, while her companion stands in a heavy emerald-green satin ensemble holding an intricate lace parasol. The lower margin bears the hand-engraved publication title and the official printer mark "Leroy, Imp. Paris."
This original 1800s paper engraving is elevated by its premium presentation: it features an oval-cut window framed by a luxurious, shimmering violet-colored watermarked silk mat with a distinct moiré luster. The piece is housed behind glass in a monumental 3.5-inch deep custom-built molded wood frame featuring deep mahogany tones and a fine gold-gilt inner liner. The reverse retains its authentic, age-toned antique cardboard backing secured by early fasteners and traditional hand-twisted braided steel hanging wire.
A magnificent statement piece for traditional, European estate, grandmillennial, or historic interior design aesthetics.

The paper shows a soft, warm natural patina and light toning consistent with a 150-year-old document. The watermark silk matting and protective glass are in pristine condition. The massive custom wood frame is structurally rock-solid with an elegant gloss finish, displaying minor, age-appropriate surface nicks and scuffs that enhance its antique character. The reverse cardboard shows expected age-related discoloration and a light cosmetic edge split that does not compromise the security or preservation of the enclosed artwork. less
