The exterior is etched with dense, flowing scrollwork and floral motifs across every surface, giving the piece a rich, all-over decorative texture typical of Chinese export boxes from this tradition.

Set into the lid is an oval sepia-toned image of two embracing figures in a garden setting, rendered in a soft, painterly style, framed by a gilt floral border against a dark ground. The hardware is simple brass hook-and-eye closures on both the lid and drawer. See less
