A contemplative mixed-media abstract composition titled “Kala” by American artist David Shapiro. Hand signed in pencil, titled, dated and annotated 13/20 along the lower margin. Executed in 1988, the work features an embossed vertical rectangular form divided into two fields, incorporating thin raised concentric circles and linear red accents against richly textured surfaces. Presented on handmade deckled-edge paper, the composition reflects Shapiro’s interest in meditative geometry, material sensitivity, and subtle spatial relationships. The restrained palette of deep rust, black, and red enhances the work’s quiet atmospheric quality while emphasizing the tactile nature of the embossed and layered surfaces.
From a private collection. Dimensions: 37.5”h x 31”w x 1.5”d. In good vintage condition. Full condition report available upon request.
David Shapiro (1944-2014) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, and poet associated with postwar American abstraction. Born in New York City, Shapiro studied at the Pratt Institute and became known for his meditative compositions that merged geometric abstraction with spiritual and philosophical influences drawn from Zen Buddhism and ancient cultures. His work was exhibited internationally and included in the collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to his visual art practice, Shapiro was an accomplished writer and critic whose interdisciplinary approach helped establish him as an influential figure in late 20th-century contemporary art.
