This exceptional pair of low lounge chairs stands as a refined example of Carlo Hauner’s distinctive approach to Brazilian modernism, where sculptural elegance and everyday comfort are brought into perfect balance. Designed in the mid-1950s, these chairs embody the optimism and material experimentation that defined postwar design in Brazil, while remaining timeless in both form and presence. The chairs are constructed around a beautifully shaped solid steel structure, finished in black paint as originally intended by the designer. The slender yet expressive frame supports an organically formed shell seat, newly upholstered in a luxurious beige sand bouclé fabric. The tactile richness of the bouclé enhances the soft, enveloping shape of the seat, creating an inviting and deeply comfortable seating experience. The proportions are low and relaxed, encouraging a natural lounging posture without sacrificing visual lightness. A particularly striking detail is found in the solid hardwood armrests, whose deep tone and expressive grain add warmth and contrast to the metal structure. This careful interplay between industrial steel and natural wood is characteristic of Hauner’s work and reflects his ability to combine materials with both sensitivity and clarity. The brass feet provide an elegant finishing touch, subtly elevating the design while reinforcing its refined character. The upholstery and foam are entirely new and finished with soft down filling, ensuring exceptional comfort. The chairs have been fully restored with great respect for their original design, including the recolor of the structures to their authentic black finish. Photographs documenting their original condition are available upon request. Sculptural, comfortable and rare, this pair of lounge chairs represents a remarkable and highly collectible example of Carlo Hauner’s enduring craftsmanship and vision.
