painting details
elegant floral compositions, consisting of sumptuous and assorted bouquets—with roses, carnations, tulips, and bluebells—overflowing from two heterogeneous vases, one in white and blue porcelain with landscape decorations, the other gilded and embossed in the classic amphora shape, both resting on stone bases.
the characteristics of the works allow us to easily place them within the typical production of francesco lavagna (naples, 1684 - 1724), one of the most renowned exponents of neapolitan still life painting of the early 18th century, along with gaspare lopez, both of whom trained in the atelier of andrea belvedere.
this is an excellent example of the painter's aesthetic level and expressive qualities, capable of creating vibrant compositions with a striking aesthetic and a characteristic rocaille style. He also displays a beautiful sense of color, enhanced by the skillful interplay of glazes and textures.
a distinctive and recurring element in his artistic compositions, a true trademark, is the white majolica vase with blue decorations on the first canvas. Lavagna often included ceramic vases, jugs, and plates with a delicate blue hue to create luminous contrasts with the vibrant colors of the flowers and fruits. The presence of these objects reflected the era's taste for the fine craftsmanship circulating in the port of naples, including pieces inspired by oriental porcelain.
neapolitan still life, once sought after by major collectors and destined to adorn naples' most beautiful palaces, finds a prominent exponent in francesco lavagna, much loved by such clients, with his never banal canvases endowed with a descriptive ability of remarkable visual impact.
