A carved walnut side chair with a shaped and moulded back frame centred on a carved cartouche, acanthus carving over the knees, scrolled volute feet, and a serpentine X-stretcher with a carved centre boss. The front apron carries a deeply undercut spray of naturalistic flowers in high relief - open blooms, buds and foliage, carved by hand and crisp throughout.

That apron is the best carving in this group of chairs, and it is what lifts the piece above decorative. The cream matelasse is clean and recent, the raised floral weave suits the frame, and brass nailheads follow the line front and back. This one needs nothing doing to it.

ON THE DATE
The carving is hand-cut and well above production standard, with patina built up in the undercuts. The X-stretcher carries old worm flight holes and the feet show genuine floor wear. Against that, the chair has been professionally reupholstered and a modern dust cover closes the underside, so the frame's hidden construction cannot be read without lifting it.

We have not had it authenticated and we are not claiming a documented date. The carving quality and the wear point to real age; a good 19th-century chair in the Louis XV taste can present the same way. Priced on what can actually be seen.
