An original Getty Research Institute exhibition photographic print by Julius Shulman (1910–2009), depicting Richard Neutra’s landmark Lovell Health House in Los Angeles, photographed in 1929. Produced by the Getty Research Institute for Julius Shulman’s Los Angeles, presented at the Los Angeles Public Library’s Central Library from October 6, 2007, through January 27, 2008.
This 16 × 20-inch black-and-white archival photographic print was displayed in the original exhibition and retains its Getty exhibition identification label on the reverse of the frame.
Printed during Shulman’s lifetime, the photograph is distinguished by its direct institutional exhibition provenance. Unlike a commercially issued reproduction, this example was produced specifically for the Getty-organized exhibition.
Completed in 1929, Richard Neutra’s Lovell Health House in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles is among the most significant early examples of International Style architecture in the United States. Commissioned by physician and health advocate Philip Lovell, the residence introduced an innovative steel-frame structure, expansive glazing, and an architectural approach emphasizing light, air, and modern living.
Julius Shulman’s photography played a central role in documenting and popularizing Southern California modernism. His images of buildings by Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Pierre Koenig, John Lautner, and other influential architects helped define the international perception of midcentury Los Angeles architecture.
In 2005, the Getty Research Institute acquired Shulman’s photographic archive, comprising more than 260,000 photographic materials. The 2007 exhibition, Julius Shulman’s Los Angeles, presented approximately 150 photographs examining the architectural and urban development of Los Angeles through Shulman’s lens.
