An exceptionally substantial, attributed Early 20th Century Southeast Asian hollow cast brass Buddha head distinguished by its serene expression, elongated earlobes, traditional ushnisha, and richly articulated spiral curls. Measuring approximately eleven inches high and weighing roughly ten pounds, the sculpture possesses a remarkable sense of gravitas rarely encountered in decorative examples of this scale.
What immediately distinguishes this piece is its construction. The open base reveals extensive retained terracotta-like casting-core material throughout much of the interior cavity, along with thick casting walls, naturally developed verdigris, deep oxidation, and an irregular hand-finished base opening. These characteristics are consistent with traditional clay-core casting methods and support the attribution to an earlier, traditionally produced Southeast Asian work rather than a later decorative reproduction. Comparable Buddhist castings and collector examples frequently note surviving red clay casting-core material as a desirable indicator of traditional manufacture.
The warm brass surface exhibits decades of accumulated patina, oxidation, tonal variation, and handling wear, creating a visual depth that cannot be authentically replicated. Layers of golden brass, deep brown oxidation, and traces of blue-green verdigris animate the surface, while the interplay between the smooth facial planes and densely textured spiral curls produces extraordinary sculptural presence from every angle.
The iconography follows enduring Buddhist traditions. The elongated earlobes symbolize Siddhartha Gautama's former royal status and subsequent renunciation of worldly wealth. The ushnisha traditionally represents enlightenment and transcendent wisdom, while the tightly coiled curls appear throughout centuries of Buddhist artistic production across Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Cambodia, and neighboring regions.
Beyond its decorative appeal, the sculpture presents compelling attributes for collectors. The retained casting-core material, substantial weight, interior oxidation, thick-walled casting, and hand-finished base construction separate it from the majority of decorative brass Buddha heads encountered in the contemporary interiors market.
Whether positioned atop a console, incorporated into a curated library, anchoring a meditation space, or displayed within a layered global interior, the sculpture functions simultaneously as artwork, artifact, and conversation piece.
Designer Notes:
Few sculptural objects provide the visual weight and material authenticity of an aged cast Buddha head. Richly modeled curls, areas of verdigris, naturally oxidized recesses, and a warm brass surface create exceptional dimensionality under both natural and ambient lighting.
The approximately ten-pound weight gives the object a physical presence often absent from contemporary decorative castings. Particularly effective within Organic Modern, Wabi-Sabi, Belgian Minimalist, Global Eclectic, Traditional, and Collected Interiors where authentic materials and sculptural forms are celebrated.
Collector Notes:
This attributed Southeast Asian example retains extensive earthen casting-core material adhered throughout much of the hollow interior cavity. Combined with its substantial weight, thick-walled construction, naturally developed verdigris, age-related oxidation, and irregular hand-finished base opening, these characteristics support attribution to traditional manufacture.
The retained clay-core material is particularly noteworthy. Surviving casting-core residue is documented in traditionally produced Buddhist metalwork and is frequently referenced by specialists and dealers when evaluating hand-cast Southeast Asian examples.
The sculpture is offered as an attributed Early 20th Century Southeast Asian example based on observed construction techniques, materials, oxidation patterns, and stylistic characteristics.

Surface wear, oxidation, verdigris, finish variation, pitting, casting irregularities, and areas of discoloration are present throughout and contribute to the sculpture's character and authenticity. As shown in the photographs, there is a small chip to the upper edge of one elongated earlobe. The interior retains substantial earthen casting-core material along with age-related oxidation and mineralization, further supporting the sculpture's traditionally cast construction. Wear is consistent with the attributed age of the piece and contributes significantly to its visual richness, material depth, and historic presence. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description. less
