The striking exterior is complemented by brass edging, an inset brass plaque on the lid, and a decorative keyhole escutcheon.

The box opens to reveal a beautifully constructed wood interior with a removable lift-out tray and divided compartments beneath, originally designed for organizing small personal possessions. The warm reddish-brown interior provides an appealing contrast to the dark, richly patterned exterior.
