This pair of vintage lidded jars takes the classic silhouette of a Chinese ginger jar, with a rounded, bulbous body rising to a short neck and topped with a domed lid, all raised on an elaborately scalloped, wave-form foot that gives the pair a distinctive, dynamic base unlike a typical flat-bottomed jar. The entire surface, lid, body, and base alike, is densely decorated in rich cobalt blue against a crisp white ground, with an all-over pattern of scrolling foliage, stylized flowers, and leafy vines executed in traditional underglaze blue painting. A narrow decorative band encircles the neck just below the lid’s brim, adding a subtle break in the pattern and framing the transition between lid and body. Each lid is crowned with a gold-plated finial in the form of a seated mythical beast, likely a stylized foo lion or guardian creature, its bright metallic finish providing a striking, playful contrast to the cool blue-and-white palette below. The dense, all-over floral patterning combined with the sculptural scalloped base and gilt finial gives these jars genuine decorative presence, blending traditional Chinese ceramic motifs with a bold, more contemporary sculptural silhouette.
Display this pair on pedestals, a console table, or flanking a fireplace for dramatic, coordinated decorative impact. Their rich blue-and-white pattern and gilt accents suit Chinoiserie, Traditional, Global Eclectic, Maximalist, and Transitional interiors. Each jar measures 11 in / 279 mm wide, 11 in / 279 mm deep, and 20 in / 508 mm high. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and wipe with a barely damp cloth as needed; avoid abrasive cleaners that could affect the gold-plated finials or dull the glaze. The pair is in very good vintage condition, with the ceramic surfaces exhibiting a vibrant glaze and minor age-appropriate crazing, gold-plated elements intact with slight tarnishing typical of age, and no visible chips or cracks; the jars are structurally sound and visually appealing.
