The substantial composition depicts a horse and is both signed and dated 1826 by the artist, placing it among Nedham's early recorded equestrian works. William Nedham is believed to have been born at Syston, Leicestershire, in December 1801. During his career he produced a number of equestrian paintings depicting horses and sporting subjects in Leicestershire and the surrounding counties. Of particular interest is the possible connection between this painting and Charles Meynell of Clopton House, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. Nedham is known to have painted an apparently identical horse in another work associated with Clopton House, and the date of the present painting corresponds with the period in which Charles Meynell was connected with the property. While this potential identification adds considerable historical interest, the identity of the subject has not been definitively established. The painting is presented within an impressive 19th-century frame bearing the label of the noted French framers and packers Ernest Royer, 14 Rue du Cherche-Midi, Paris. with its substantial scale, documented artist's signature and date, period frame and intriguing possible connection with Clopton House, this is a particularly impressive example of early 19th-century British equestrian painting.
