Folk Art Textile Landscape with Castle, circa 1930s Material: Textile, Embroidery, Hardwood A beautifully executed British folk art textile picture … Read more Folk Art Textile Landscape with Castle, circa 1930s Material: Textile, Embroidery, Hardwood A beautifully executed British folk art textile picture dating from the interwar period, depicting an atmospheric and romanticised landscape with stylised castle towers, an arched bridge and sweeping cloud formations. Entirely worked in embroidery, the composition employs dense directional stitching to create contour, texture and a remarkable sense of depth and movement. The landscape is rendered in a sophisticated palette of muted sage greens, blues, warm ochres and coral tones, combining traditional needlework with the distinctive illustrative character of early 20th century British decorative art. The architectural elements rise dramatically through the landscape, while the rhythmic treatment of the surrounding hills and sky gives the composition an appealing dreamlike quality. The craftsmanship is particularly evident in the careful variation of stitch direction and density throughout the scene. The work is initialled “M.S.” within the embroidery. The original paper-lined reverse bears a handwritten inscription connecting the piece with Russell Lewis of Hids Field, Cumnor Hill, Oxford, providing an interesting documented association with the work. Presented within its original figured hardwood frame in warm maple and walnut tones, complete with its original brass hanging ring. The survival of the frame, backing and handwritten inscription adds considerably to the untouched character of the piece. Presented in excellent vintage condition. The embroidery remains remarkably vibrant and well preserved, while the original frame and paper backing display minor age-related wear and an attractive natural patina.
