This impressive historical object is distinguished by the exceptional quality of its traditional maki-e lacquer work. The broad paddle and handle are formed in beautifully finished black lacquered wood, creating a dramatic ground for the bold opposing symbols executed in gold lacquer using gold powder. The restrained combination of deep black lacquer and luminous gold gives the fan a particularly powerful and sophisticated appearance, reflecting the extraordinary skill associated with Japanese lacquer craftsmanship. The handle terminates in an elaborate silvered copper fitting decorated with finely traced trailing vines. A silk cord is attached to the handle, completing the composition. Gunbai were associated with the samurai military tradition and were used by commanders as symbols of authority and as signalling and command implements. Their distinctive paddle-like form has consequently become closely associated with Japanese martial culture. Dating from the first half of the 18th century, this example combines considerable historical interest with accomplished decorative craftsmanship. The quality of its lacquer, gold decoration and finely worked metal fitting makes it particularly appealing both as an example of Japanese lacquerwork and as an artefact of Edo-period military culture. A rare opportunity for a serious collector of Japanese lacquer, samurai objects or Asian arms and armour to acquire an impressive piece of early 18th-century Japanese history.
