A very refined, round iron tsuba, known as Maru-Gata, with openwork (sukashi) featuring five-petaled Sakura cherry blossom motifs on either side of the nakago-ana, the central perforation.
Positioned between the blade and the handle, the tsuba not only protects the wielder's hand from enemy blows but also serves as a counterweight for the overall balance of the sword.
Over time, tsuba have become true works of art, highly sought after by collectors.
