An exceptional pair of 19th-century Chinese low-back armchairs, traditionally known as Rose Chairs (Meiguiyi) or Southern Official's Hat Chairs (Nanguanmaoyi). Embodying the minimalist sophistication of the Ming Dynasty design ethos, these architectural chairs feature low profiles and perfectly square silhouettes that make them highly versatile accent pieces for modern, eclectic, or traditional interiors.
Design & Craftsmanship:
Each chair is beautifully bench-crafted from solid elmwood (ju wood), featuring an open-frame backrest supported by a central vertical splat and clean geometric vertical banisters. The squared seats rest above straight, square legs secured by robust peripheral stretchers at varying heights and a classic front footrest. True to historical construction methods, the chairs are built using masterfully tight mortise-and-tenon joinery with traditional wooden pinning visible on the frame and underside.
The finish showcases a beautiful, rich amber-brown patina with a soft hand-rubbed luster that highlights the prominent natural grain of the antique elm.
Styling & Placement:
Historically placed beneath windows or in scholar's studies due to their low, non-obstructive backrests, these chairs function beautifully today as striking entry hall statements, sophisticated flankers for a sideboard, or unique sculptural accent seating in a living room.
Condition Report
Very Good Antique Condition. Both chairs are structurally tight, remarkably sturdy, and completely level. The authentic timber has aged beautifully, retaining minor age-appropriate surface wear, faint cosmetic scuffs, and natural tonal variations that enhance their historic character and provenance. No major splits or structural repairs noted.
