This vintage stoneware vase is a graceful study in studio pottery, its tall, cylindrical body pinching in gently at the waist before sweeping outward into a wide, generously flared collar. The silhouette is clean and confident, with faint throwing rings visible across the surface that reveal the hand of the potter. The raw clay body is left exposed over most of the exterior, a warm, speckled blend of cream, oatmeal, and soft apricot, with a vertical blush of burnt orange where the kiln atmosphere touched the surface. Fine dark iron specks scatter across the clay like grains of pepper, adding a toothy, earthy texture that begs to be touched. Around the collar, a glossy olive-green and tobacco-brown glaze pools along the rolled rim and runs downward in bold, rhythmic drips of varying length. The glaze deepens to near black at the tips of each drip, creating a striking contrast against the matte, sandy body. Inside, the same glaze flows into a lustrous, mottled slate and bronze surface with a glassy sheen. The rim is softly rounded and thickly glazed, giving the opening a finished, tactile edge. The balance of rough and glossy surfaces gives the piece wonderful depth from every angle.
Place it on a console, mantel, sideboard, or floor beside a sofa, where its earthy palette suits Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Japandi, Rustic, and Wabi-Sabi interiors. It is striking alone as a sculptural accent or filled with dried pampas, branches, or tall stems. The vase measures 6.0 inches wide, 6.0 inches deep, and 11.25 inches high, with a 6.0 inch diameter. Condition is very good, with minor surface irregularities from handcrafting and no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. To care for it, wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth, dry thoroughly, and avoid abrasive pads or harsh cleaners. Use a liner for fresh flowers to protect the clay body.
