This vintage stoneware vase is a rugged, deeply tactile object, its broad, shouldered body tapering gracefully to a narrow foot beneath a short, flared collar. The raw, sandy clay body is left partially exposed in a warm oatmeal and taupe tone, its toothy surface speckled with tiny iron inclusions that give the piece an earthy, geological character. Across this field, glossy black-brown glaze flows in sinuous, branching ribbons that resemble bare winter trees, river deltas, or ancient cave drawings. Where the dark glaze thins, it breaks into amber and olive halos, while heavier pools near the base turn dense and almost black with flashes of glassy, reflective sheen. The rim is dressed in a softer pale gray-green glaze streaked with ochre, rust, and drips of dark glaze that run down the neck in spontaneous, hand-applied gestures. Subtle variations in glaze thickness, small pinholes, and kiln speckling confirm the artisanal, studio-made nature of the piece. The contrast between matte, rough clay and slick, molten glaze creates striking depth from every angle.
Display it on a console, mantel, shelf, or entry table, where its earthy palette suits Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Japandi, Rustic, and Wabi-Sabi interiors. It is striking alone as a sculptural accent or filled with dried grasses, pampas, or branches. The vase measures 5.5 inches wide, 5.5 inches deep, and 8.25 inches high, with a 5.5 inch diameter. Condition is very good, with minor surface irregularities and no visible chips, cracks, or repairs. To care for it, wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth, dry thoroughly, and avoid abrasive pads or harsh cleaners. Use a liner for fresh flowers, as the porous clay may seep.
