This antique chest from Italy is a beautifully preserved example of the Lacca Povera tradition, (literally "poor man's lacquer"), a uniquely Venetian technique that became fashionable during the eighteenth century. The chest features a subtly serpentine form, with gently bowed drawer fronts and softly molded edges that lend elegance and movement to the overall silhouette. The shaped top follows the same graceful contour, while the molded base rests above a scalloped apron that completes the refined Rococo profile. The surface is richly decorated with hand-applied painted and decoupage-style imagery characteristic of the Lacca Povera aesthetic. The top depicts a romantic landscape with period figures engaged in leisurely outdoor activities. The scene is framed by an elaborate network of scrolling cartouches and asymmetrical rocaille motifs. The drawer fronts give a visual narrative through a series of finely detailed miniature scenes. Delicately rendered figures in eighteenth-century attire are interspersed with horse-drawn carriages, exotic landscapes, palms, garden ornaments, architectural follies, and travelers engaged in conversation. The sides are adorned with large pastoral cartouches framed by elaborate gilt scrollwork, depicting figures gathered in idyllic landscapes, garden settings, and architectural scenes. One panel portrays elegantly dressed figures conversing beneath a tree in a picturesque countryside setting, while another illustrates figures assembled near a villa and garden pavilion. Smaller vignettes below depict groups of individuals in period costume engaged in leisurely outdoor activities, suggesting themes of courtship, travel, and rural life. The hardware is equally decorative, featuring large flower-form brass drawer pulls with radiating petals and elaborate brass escutcheons depicting opposing female caryatid-like figures flanking the keyhole. The hardware complements the painted decoration beautifully and enhances the Rococo character of the piece. The drawer arrangement consists of two small upper drawers above three full-sized, graduated drawers. The primary color palette consists of a vibrant turquoise-blue ground accented by warm cream panels, gold, and earthy tones throughout the painted scenes. Soft greens, muted reds, ochres, browns, and touches of black animate the figures and landscapes. The chest exhibits age and authentic wear throughout, including craquelure, scattered paint wear (particularly to top), surface scratches, minor separations in the wood, and a richly developed patina that only centuries of use can create. These signs of age contribute to the piece's character and desirability, enhancing rather than detracting from its decorative appeal. This remarkable 18th century Venetian commode would make a stunning statement chest in a primary bedroom, a dramatic accent piece in a living room, or an elegant focal point in an entry hall beneath a gilt mirror. Its vibrant turquoise finish, romantic scenes, and centuries-old patina make it as much a work of art as a functional furnishing. See less
