This antique raised chest from France is surmounted by its original marble top with front edge following the undulating form as the striking serpentine shaped case on which it rests. The two full sized drawers housed within the case are veneered in exceptionally figured burl walnut, displaying dramatic swirling grain patterns, feathered figuring, and rich color variations. Each drawer is fitted with original Rococo-inspired brass hardware, including pierced escutcheons and scrolling foliate bail pulls, displaying a mellow aged patina. The carved details throughout the case are of particularly fine quality. The corner stiles are embellished with scrolling acanthus and foliate carvings that flow naturally into the legs below. The deeply shaped and scalloped apron is richly decorated with hand-carved Rococo ornament centered by an impressive shell cartouche. The central shell is framed by scrolling acanthus leaves, floral rosettes, and flowing foliate motifs, creating a sense of movement and refinement characteristic of the Louis XV style. The chest is raised on four elegant cabriole legs carved with acanthus leaves, foliate scrolls, and shell-inspired details at the knees. The carvings continue subtly down the legs, terminating in finely formed scroll feet. The marble is a warm rose color with cream, gray, and white tones, beautifully veined throughout. The commode remains in very good antique condition, retaining a rich, warm patina developed through generations of careful use. Expected minor surface wear and small imperfections are present and consistent with an authentic 18th-century piece.
