Vintage French Provençal Cicada Vase Attributed to Louis Sicard – Hand-Painted Yellow Glazed Pottery
A charming and highly decorative vintage French ceramic vase, tentatively attributed to Louis Sicard (1871–1946), the celebrated Provençal ceramic artist renowned for his iconic cicada pottery.
This striking double-handled vase features a rich golden-yellow glazed finish, beautifully contrasted with hand-painted woodland scenery, dark botanical motifs and architectural silhouettes.
Its most distinctive feature is the original, three-dimensional ceramic cicada, delicately modelled and hand-coloured with intricate wing detailing. The cicada is an enduring symbol of Provence and became closely associated with the celebrated ceramic tradition established by Louis Sicard in Aubagne, southern France.
The vase's elegant amphora-inspired silhouette, sculptural twin handles and vibrant Mediterranean colour palette capture the charm of traditional French Provençal decorative arts.
An intriguing painted inscription appears on the body, potentially reading fait, the French word for “made.” The exact wording and maker remain unverified.
