A striking pair of mid-century Mexican rustic wooden chairs, circa 1950–1970, distinguished by their unusual geometric backrests and boldly sculptural construction.
The tall ladder backs feature distinctive stepped, razor-blade-shaped splats, lending a graphic architectural quality to the design. Substantial plank seats with softly rounded corners rest upon heavy square legs, the front legs each carved from a single piece of wood with angular, projecting triangular elements. These unusual sculptural details give the chairs a distinctly Brutalist character.
Rooted in traditional Mexican vernacular furniture, the chairs combine primitive craftsmanship with a strong geometric sensibility. The beautifully aged wood exhibits warm honey and reddish-brown tones, pronounced grain, exposed joinery, and a rich accumulation of surface patina.
Stamped “MEXICO” on the underside of the seat.
With their distinctive silhouettes and wonderfully rustic surfaces, these chairs would be equally compelling in a traditional interior or juxtaposed with contemporary furnishings.
Sold as a pair.
Good vintage condition with substantial surface wear and patina consistent with age and use. The wood exhibits scratches, areas of discoloration, age-related checking, and minor losses. The plank seats show visible grain separations, old fastener marks, and variations in finish. The carved front legs retain their distinctive projecting triangular details. Wear and irregularities throughout are consistent with the chairs’ rustic construction and contribute to their character.
