A beautiful and exceptionally decorative early 19th-century French ornithological engraving depicting “La Perruche Ara Pavouane Tapiré,” Plate XV, after Jacques Barraband (1767–1809), from François Levaillant’s celebrated Histoire Naturelle des Perroquets, originally published between 1801 and 1805.
The striking parrot is rendered in rich shades of turquoise, coral and blue, perched gracefully on a branch against a softly neutral background. Barraband’s bird illustrations are among the most admired works of early 19th-century French natural history art, renowned for their remarkable detail, elegant compositions, and sophisticated coloring.
Beautifully presented in an elegant gilt frame with layered blue (which is outlined in gold) and cream matting that complements the bird’s vivid plumage. An oval brass inventory plaque numbered 659 is affixed to the reverse.
The paper measures approximately 18½ inches high by 12–13 inches wide. Overall framed height is 22½ inches.
Believed to be an early 19th-century stipple engraving. Exact printing date has not been independently verified.
A sophisticated statement piece for a traditional, collected, or eclectic interior, particularly appealing to collectors of antique ornithological prints and French natural history illustrations.
