An exceptionally decorative 19th-century French Louis XV-style inkwell, or encrier, by the celebrated Parisian firm of Maison Millet, associated with Théodore Millet. Combining the exuberance of the Rococo revival with the exceptional bronze craftsmanship for which Maison Millet became renowned, this remarkable desk accessory exemplifies the refinement and artistry of French decorative arts during the second half of the 19th century.
The composition is distinguished by its elaborate gilt-bronze ormolu mounts, sculptural foliate ornament, and richly figured wooden surfaces. Two covered inkwells sit symmetrically within an elegantly shaped, wood-inlaid platform, each crowned by an intricately decorated lid with a raised finial. The surrounding gilt-bronze framework features pierced scrollwork and finely modeled foliate details, while a dramatic, branching arrangement of naturalistic leaves rises from the rear, creating a striking sculptural silhouette. Beneath, the shaped base is adorned with flowing Rococo scrolls, delicate foliage, and a prominent shell-form motif at the center of the front apron. The result is an object that transcends its original practical purpose, functioning as a miniature work of decorative sculpture.
The contrast between the warm, richly toned wood and the luminous gilt-bronze ornament gives the piece considerable visual depth. Curving lines, asymmetrical foliage, pierced details, and elaborate cast ornament evoke the graceful vocabulary of the Louis XV period, reinterpreted through the sophisticated craftsmanship and luxurious taste of the Belle Époque. Every element contributes to the inkwell's sense of movement and refinement, from the sculptural rear ornament to the beautifully articulated bronze mounts surrounding the ink pots.
Of particular importance, the bronze mounts are signed “MB” underneath, providing a significant detail for collectors and researchers of Maison Millet. Specialist auction descriptions identify the MB initials on related Maison Millet bronze mounts with Blaise Millet, the firm's founder. This is an important distinction: the mark is associated with the Maison Millet workshop and its bronze work, rather than serving as a direct signature by Théodore Millet himself.
Maison Millet occupied an important position among the distinguished Parisian furniture makers and decorative-art firms of the 19th century. The firm is generally dated to the middle of the century, with historical auction references variously identifying its establishment as 1853 or 1857. Founded by Blaise Millet according to Sotheby's research, the business expanded considerably under his son Théodore during the 1890s. Operating from rue Jacques-Cœur in Paris before relocating to boulevard Beaumarchais, Maison Millet became known for its production of fine furniture and artistic bronzes in both historical and contemporary styles.
The firm's specialty included furniture in the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, distinguished by elaborate gilt-bronze mounts, carefully selected materials, and highly accomplished craftsmanship. Maison Millet received significant recognition at international exhibitions, including a gold medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle and a Grand Prix in 1900. Its reputation became so considerable that, in 1902, the firm received authorization from the Palais de Versailles to reproduce Marie-Antoinette's celebrated Grand cabinet à bijoux. This commission stands as a testament to the esteem in which the firm's craftsmanship was held.
Maison Millet also maintained a professional relationship with François Linke, one of the most celebrated ébénistes of the Belle Époque. Its work belongs to the same broader world of luxury French furniture and decorative arts in which historical styles were reinterpreted with exceptional materials, sophisticated bronze work, and ambitious artistic design. Although Maison Millet's production is best known for its furniture, objects such as this inkwell demonstrate how the firm's decorative vocabulary could be translated into smaller, highly sculptural accessories for the refined interior.
Important Sotheby's Reference:
A variation of this inkwell, also by Maison Millet, was featured in the distinguished Sotheby's sale Important French Furniture and Decorations, Including Signed Furniture and Items from the Linke Family Private Collection, Volume I, illustrated on page 126, lot 95. This related example provides a valuable comparative reference for collectors interested in the firm's decorative objects and the broader tradition of fine French ormolu-mounted desk accessories.
The present example is particularly appealing for its elaborate foliate superstructure, beautifully detailed covered inkwells, richly toned wood, and sculptural Rococo base. Its combination of historical reference, artistic bronze work, and documented association with the Maison Millet tradition makes it an engaging addition to a collection of French antiques, Belle Époque decorative arts, or distinguished writing accessories.
Elegant enough for a library, study, executive desk, or curated antique interior, this exceptional encrier offers both decorative presence and historical interest. It is a fine example of the 19th-century French tradition of elevating everyday objects into objects of art.
