Grosfeld House was an important New York furniture maker and retailer whose work spanned the 1930s through the 1970s. It was known for its Hollywood Regency style furniture that embraced glamour, historical references, and luxurious finishes. This demi-lune console is centered by a monumental sculpted plaster scallop shell, modeled with deeply articulated ribs, layered scalloped edges and sweeping acanthus-like scrolls at its base. The ivory colored shell is contrasted by a black painted wood top and corresponding black base.
In modern homes, this console would be ideal in an entry foyer beneath oversized artwork or a large gilt mirror. In a contemporary living area, the console would look dramatic with a pair of sculptural lamps, a single large ceramic vessel, or an arrangement of books or objects de art. It could also serve as a small bar console, displaying decanters and glassware. This table would complement Hollywood Regency, Art Deco Inspired, Neoclassical, Contemporary, or Eclectic interiors.
