This vintage paperweight is a small, jewel-like object, a rounded, softly triangular block of polished resin that holds natural shell suspended beneath its surface. Two pieces of iridescent abalone-style shell sit side by side in a curving, yin-yang-like arrangement against a deep midnight-blue field. The mother-of-pearl interior glows in seafoam, aqua, and pale mint, with flashes of lavender and silver that shift as the light moves. A row of small, dark respiratory holes along the shell edge adds an authentic natural detail, and a rippled, pearly lip shows at the lower edge. Below the blue cap, the body of the piece transitions to a warm, translucent amber and cognac brown, with deeper burgundy clouds and a few tiny dark inclusions that read like fossil flecks. The resin is glassy and smooth, with softly rounded edges and a high gloss that magnifies the depth of the shell. The contrast of cool aquatic color against warm amber gives the piece a striking, almost molten quality. The base is flat and even, so it sits steadily on a desk or shelf.
Compact and weighty, this paperweight suits a desk, bookshelf, console, coffee table, or vanity, where it holds papers or serves as a sculptural tabletop accent. It complements Mid-Century Modern, Coastal, Hollywood Regency, Organic Modern, and Eclectic interiors. The piece measures 4.75 inches wide, 4.75 inches deep, and 2 inches high. Condition is very good: the original finish is smooth and glossy, with minor surface wear consistent with age and no visible chips or cracks. For care, dust with a soft dry cloth, clean gently with mild soapy water, and avoid abrasive pads, solvents, and prolonged direct sun, which can yellow or dull resin.
