HISTORY & SIGNIFICANCE
Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707–1788), was one of the most influential naturalists of the Enlightenment. His ambitious Histoire naturelle, first published in 1749, brought the wonders of the animal kingdom to a broad audience through richly illustrated scientific studies. The project became a monumental publishing undertaking, continuing and expanding long after his death.
Copperplate engraving was a painstaking art. Each illustration was created by cutting exceptionally fine lines into polished copper, working ink into the grooves, and pressing damp paper against the plate. This remarkable technique produced the delicate detail and crisp linework that make antique natural history engravings so captivating more than two centuries later.
