An exceptional 19th-century Chinese wedding rice bucket, beautifully crafted from wood with a rich reddish-brown finish, decorative floral handles, and substantial brass fittings.
This distinctive antique features two solid brass bands encircling its rounded wooden body, secured with aged, domed metal nail heads. The fitted wooden lid is crowned by an elegant leaf-shaped brass pull, a particularly charming detail that complements the hand-painted floral decoration in shades of red, green, and gold.
The traditional construction is equally fascinating. The underside reveals individual wooden boards reinforced by crossed wooden supports, with visible metal fasteners and a folded metal fitting at their intersection. What appear to be wooden shims beneath portions of the brass banding offer an interesting glimpse into the vessel's craftsmanship.
The wood exhibits beautiful grain variations, with a warm red finish extending throughout the interior and exterior. The naturally aged brass, richly developed patina, and decorative detailing give this piece wonderful character.
Traditionally associated with Chinese wedding celebrations, rice buckets symbolize prosperity, abundance, and good fortune in marriage.
