After studying in … Read more Ron Arad, born in Tel Aviv in 1951, is among the most inventive designers of his generation. After studying in Jerusalem and at the Architectural Association in London, he began making sculptural furniture by hand from welded sheet steel, later bringing that same spirit to serial production.

In 2002 Arad revisited his celebrated Well Tempered Chair of 1986, swapping its tempered steel for a far more advanced material. The Bad Tempered Chair is built from die cut panels of carbon and Kevlar composite, curled into a seat, a backrest and two sweeping open armrests, then held together with nothing more than exposed wing nuts. Light, strong and surprisingly flexible, it rewards the sitter with a gentle spring, while the woven carbon surface shimmers as the light moves across it.

Vitra planned an edition of 1000, yet fewer than 200 left
production between 2002 and 2009. Today it is regarded as a landmark of experimental design from the early 2000s and appears regularly at international design auctions.

This chair bears the label signed by Ron Arad and numbered 136/1000.
