A small sunburst inlay of lighter wood sits at the center of the shaped crest rail. Open, scrolled arms with slender spindles curve down to a lightly curved seat, and the legs and stretchers are turned in a ringed profile that echoes bamboo. Drawing-room chairs of this kind were lighter and more graceful than the heavy upholstered seating that came before them. Decorative inlay and bamboo-like turning recall the later 19th century fashion for Japanese-inspired design in Britain. Navy upholstery gives the old frame a fresh, tailored look.
