Rows of fine beaded molding run around the lid and the base, and a small brass keyhole escutcheon is set into the front. A raised V-shaped line of beading and small carved details on the lid add quiet ornament to the broad, low form. Oak was the backbone of French country joinery, and in the early 1900s workshops kept the traditions of hand-finished boxes alive for letters, cards, sewing and keepsakes. This one has the solid build and the softly worn surface of a piece made to be opened every day. It would sit well on a desk, a console or a coffee table, and it works as storage as well as display.
