Antique Luba carved wood ceremonial drum from Central Africa, sculpted as an architectural composition of female caryatid figures supporting the substantial drum above.
The hand-carved figures display elongated proportions, angular shoulders, large almond-shaped eyes, and finely modeled facial features. A deeply incised crosshatched band encircles the lower drum, complemented by geometric carving across the rounded base. The drum retains its aged hide membrane at the top.
The dark surface shows extensive patina and wear, with warm reddish-brown wood emerging through areas of the nearly black finish. At 15.5 inches high, the piece has a commanding vertical presence and is particularly strong viewed in the round.
A substantial example of Luba figural carving combining functional drum form with sculptural female supports.
