An exceptional, collector-grade first-edition example of Plate XIII ("Poonah") from Henry Salt’s legendary 1809 portfolio, "Twenty-Four Views in St. Helena, the Cape, India, Ceylon, the Red Sea, Abyssinia and Egypt." Published in London by William Miller on May 1, 1809, this masterpiece was drawn by traveler Henry Salt, beautifully engraved by Daniel Havell, and executed under the direct inspection of Robert Havell Sr. This historic aquatint engraving captures a breathtaking, serene landscape view near Pune (Poonah), India, detailing traditional river boats, figures along the banks, and the rolling hills of the region.
Printed on premium, naturally acid-free 19th-century cotton-rag paper, the sheet has perfectly avoided the brittle yellowing common in later wood-pulp prints, allowing the original hand-applied watercolor pigments to remain remarkably bright, stable, and vivid. The artwork is presented in a sophisticated, designer-grade presentation featuring a bluish-gray mat that beautifully complements the cool watercolor tones of the river and distant hills. This custom matting is elevated by an elegant, gleaming gold inner liner (fillet) running along the inner window, which provides a striking, luminous border that draws the eye directly into the historic landscape. The structure is housed in a traditional, dark wood profile frame that offers a stately, museum-quality anchor suitable for high-end residential display.
Adding to its magnificent pedigree, the reverse features its authentic mid-century framing provenance from the esteemed W. King Ambler "Old Prints and Maps" gallery showroom. Marked "Exclusively for Interiors," this label documents the exact historical lineage of the plate for discerning designers and estate curators. Beautifully framed and double-matted under protective glass, this monumental 35" x 28" piece offers an immediate, stately museum-quality presence for British Colonial, Grandmillennial, Traditional, or global travel-themed design aesthetics.

The wove paper displays an authentic vintage patina with light, age-appropriate toning and very minor, isolated foxing spots that do not detract from the central image. The hand-painted watercolor pigment remains vivid and stable. Protected under glass in a high-quality frame showing only minor wear to the outer molding. On the reverse, the original antique W. King Ambler provenance label remains completely intact, exhibiting beautiful, rustic character consistent with its long-term display history. less
