A fine French Art Deco patinated bronze lidded box by renowned sculptor and designer Max Le Verrier (1891–1973), featuring his “Écu d’Or” design inspired by the medieval gold coinage of King Charles VI of France.
The circular box is richly decorated in relief, with the crowned royal shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis at its center, surrounded by Gothic-style lettering. The design reproduces the reverse of a 14th-century gold écu associated with the reign of Charles VI.
This model is documented in Max Le Verrier references as the “Coffret Écu d’Or,” model no. 737.
The bronze displays a particularly attractive original-style patina combining warm golden highlights with deep green verdigris tones, beautifully emphasizing the sculpted details.
The interior of the lid is inscribed “Écu d’or de Charles VI vers 1384” and signed M. Le Verrier. The underside of the box is also signed M. Le Verrier.
A handsome and highly decorative small object, equally suitable as a jewelry or trinket box, desk accessory, or collectible example of French Art Deco bronze work.
The piece is in good vintage condition with age-related patina and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The patination has been preserved and forms an integral part of the character of the piece. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
