A striking pair of large and weighty antique Victorian cast iron garden urns on tall architectural pedestals, manufactured by the Co-Operative Foundry of Rochester, New York, circa 1900. Each urn bears a cast foundry mark.
The classical campana-shaped urns feature winged putti blowing trumpets in relief, a charming and unusual decorative detail. The bowls have broad, overhanging rims with repeating foliate decoration and are raised on fluted pedestal stems with molded bases.
The architectural plinths are particularly impressive, with stepped moldings and deeply cast, high-relief panels featuring elaborate scrolling foliage. The pronounced depth of the ornament creates a sculptural effect, with strong contrasts of light and shadow that bring out the rich cast iron detailing. The combination of urns and plinths reflects the Victorian taste for garden decoration, while their symmetry and proportions give the pair a strong neoclassical character.
The black finish highlights the decorative relief and gives a strong architectural presence. The pair's substantial weight and cast iron construction make them particularly well suited to permanent garden placement. Standing at nearly 44 inches tall, they would make a striking statement flanking an entrance, lining a garden path, or anchoring a formal garden. They also would work beautifully on a terrace, in a conservatory, or in a spacious entry hall.
