Antique Pennsylvania Mortised Bench in Old Red Paint, Lancaster County, Circa 1860s
A wonderful long antique bench from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, circa 1860s, with great age and honest wear. The single-board top is carried on scroll-cut legs mortised through the seat. Dovetailed cross supports run beneath. The old red paint has worn to chippy patches over weathered, greyed wood, and the whole surface has a rich, mellow patina.
At 72" long, it has the presence to work as an entry or mudroom bench, a seat at a farmhouse table, or a rustic porch bench. It can also hold a collection of baskets or pottery in a living area, or stand against a kitchen wall.
Condition: As-found condition with lots of patina and chippy paint. There is loss to the wood and the paint, and old animal chew marks on the front. A drilled hole in the seat board, possibly for hanging the bench on a peg, is a quirk of its history.
