James Shilaimon (b. 1966, Greek-American)
Interior with Landscape, 2006
Oil on canvas
22" H × 20" W
Signed and dated verso
An atmospheric 2006 oil painting by Greek-born American artist James Shilaimon, depicting a quiet interior illuminated by sunlight entering through a partially lowered yellow window shade. Caught in a gentle breeze, the billowing shade introduces movement into the otherwise still room, while an electrical cord extending beyond the picture plane suggests the continuation of everyday life outside the composition. A large, softly rendered landscape painting on the adjoining wall contrasts with the room's defined architectural geometry, creating an interplay between interior and exterior space.
The work is characteristic of Shilaimon's documented series of unoccupied interiors from the mid-2000s, exploring solitude, light, and architectural space. His treatment of these subjects recalls aspects of the American realist tradition, particularly the interiors of Edward Hopper.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
James Shilaimon was born in Athens, Greece, in 1966 and immigrated to the United States during his youth. Largely self-taught, he began drawing at an early age, using art as a means of expression while adjusting to a new language and culture. His earliest drawings were made in charcoal on brown paper bags before he progressed to canvas and painting.
His multidisciplinary practice encompasses oil painting, watercolor, drawing, and sculpture, with subjects including landscapes, still lifes, figurative compositions, and architectural interiors.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, Shilaimon received numerous regional awards for his work. By the early 2000s, he had established a commercial gallery presence in Southern California, exhibiting with Ramsden Morrison Gallery in San Diego, William Merrill Gallery in Laguna Beach, and Avran Fine Art in Laguna Beach.
His paintings of unoccupied interiors are particularly notable for their exploration of solitude, architectural perspective, and the relationship between natural light and domestic space.
