On offer is an unsigned decorator piece of immense scale and substantial decorative value from the 1800s. This artwork is a European revival painting executed in the manner of Melchior d’Hondecoeter, the legendary 17th-century Dutch Baroque master. While it is physically unsigned, the composition directly mirrors Hondecoeter’s world-famous style of animalier painting. A perceptive observer, Hondecoeter generally depicted domestic and wild birds, painted with great accuracy with regard to their plumage and with subtle nuances and a mastery of textures that won him great renown. He was known for turning farmyards into theatrical, grand park scenes populated by standard domestic poultry alongside rare, status-symbol exotic birds like the peacock in this work.
SCENE: The painting portrays a bustling avian scene set in a classical, aristocratic estate park.
At center, a dominant, proud rooster and an amber-colored hen are dynamically interacting. Various fowl populate the foreground, including small chicks feeding at a stone basin, dark pullets, and a striking, long-tailed white pheasant standing at the bottom right.
In the middle-ground, a colorful blue-necked peacock and a peahen rest near a gravel path. A pigeon sits perched on a crumbling brick perimeter wall under a classical stone urn overflowing with roses. Farther in the distance, a grand villa structure anchors the atmospheric sky.
PERIOD: While Melchior d’Hondecoeter painted during the Dutch Golden Age (circa 1660–1690), the construction of this stretcher and the cleanly preserved condition of the canvas back suggest a later execution. It is highly likely a 19th-century Grand Tour style revival piece produced in Continental Europe (most likely France, Belgium, or the Netherlands) to satisfy the aristocratic demand for classical Dutch bird-menagerie decorations.
FRAME: The frame is a spectacular example of a Louis XIV or Régence-style cartouche trumeau frame. The black ebonized finish juxtaposed with the heavy, carved giltwood foliate scrolling at the crest and corners indicates it was custom-made for an overmantel, a library insert, or a grand salon presentation. The frame structure suggests a mid-to-late 19th-century construction.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent. Image dimensions: 42 inches high x 31 inches wide.
