Circa 1800–1810

This English creamware plate was made in Liverpool, probably at the Herculaneum Pottery, for the American market. At the center, a finely engraved black transfer print shows a two-masted brig under sail, viewed from the port side, with the American flag flying at the stern and a long pennant at the masthead. The warm cream ground is framed by six printed flowering stems spaced around the rim.

A single plate of this kind displays well on a plate stand on a bookshelf or desk, or hung on the wall within a group of maritime prints or other black-and-white transferware. It suits a library, study or coastal interior.

Historical Context:
After the Revolution, Liverpool potters and printers supplied creamware decorated with American ships, emblems and heroes to buyers in the new republic. The Herculaneum Pottery, founded at Toxteth in 1796, is regarded as the leading maker of these wares. Ship subjects celebrated the rapid growth of American merchant shipping before the Embargo of 1807 and the War of 1812.
