Superb 17th-century Flemish tapestry depicting a biblical scene: the meeting of David and King Saul.
At the center of the composition, David, identified by the inscription "DAVID" woven onto his shoe, appears richly dressed amidst a gathering of figures. To his left stands King Saul, portrayed as an elderly, majestic, and strongly characterized man with a long white beard and a grave expression. Draped in sumptuous garments and wearing an imposing headdress, he adopts a solemn pose and seems to address the young David directly, establishing a particularly expressive dialogue between the two.
David, in the center, is depicted in a richly ornamented costume dominated by blue and gold tones. Beside him stands an elegant female figure, while in the background, several court figures, both men and women, observe the scene. The arrangement of the figures, their gestures, and their expressions lend the whole a truly theatrical dimension.
The scene unfolds within a lush setting, composed of groves, foliage, draped hangings, and architectural elements, creating a skillful succession of planes. The refinement of the costumes is particularly remarkable: precious fabrics, embroidery, braid, and ornamental motifs testify to the care taken in both the design and its execution.
The whole is surrounded by a wide floral border, richly decorated with stylized flowers, foliage, and fruit against a dark blue background, characteristic of the decorative tradition of Flemish tapestries.
A remarkable work for the richness of its composition, the variety of the figures, and the particularly refined treatment of the costumes and decorative elements.
This tapestry is in very good condition, has retained superb colors, and is ready to be hung directly in a home. Beautiful perspective.
The tapestry is lined and we include the hanging system.
